1.  What Is The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society?

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is a nonprofit charitable organization designed to provide financial, educational, and other assistance to members of the Naval Services of the United States, eligible family members and survivors, when in need.

The Society, operating in partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps, administers nearly 300 offices ashore and afloat at Navy and Marine Corps bases around the world.

Our trained Volunteers are familiar with the special conditions of service life. They have a realistic understanding of the potential hardships facing service members and their families.


2.  Who Can Navy-Marine Corps Relief Help?

· Active duty and retired Navy and Marine Corps personnel

· Eligible family members of personnel listed above

· Eligible family members of Navy and Marine Corps personnel who died on active duty or in a retired status


3.  What Can NMCRS San Diego Offer?

· Budget Counseling -- training, education, and remedial financial counseling

· Layettes -- "junior seabags"

· Education loans and grants for spouses of active duty service members; and for children of active duty, retired, and deceased service members

· Information on education loans for active duty service members

· Coordination with civilian agencies (American Red Cross, VA, etc.) and military offices (Disbursing, Legal, Fleet and Family Service Centers, etc.)

· Interest-free loans and/or grants to help with emergencies such as:

* Funeral expenses

* Medical/dental bills

* Emergency transportation

* Food, rent, and utilities

* Disaster relief assistance

* Essential vehicle repairs

*Unforeseen family emergencies

·Visiting Nurses -- house calls and instruction to mothers with newborns, retirees, and widows/widowers

·Thrift Shops -- used items at low cost

4.  What Can't NMCRS  Do?

The Society does not:

· Pay bills for non-essentials

· Finance liberty and vacations

· Pay fines or legal expenses

· Pay taxes

· Finance recreational boats/vehicles

· Help Navy and Marine Corps families live beyond their means


5.  What You Can Do To Help Yourself?

· Take advantage of budget counseling services so you can use your pay to its maximum advantage.

· Complete a NMCRS Pre-Authorization Form or establish a Power of Attorney before you deploy. These will facilitate the  Society’s prompt response when your family seeks our assistance in your absence.

· Think! Is this a "need" or a "want?"


6.  What do you do when You Or Your Eligible Family Members Require Assistance?

· You may apply for assistance at any Navy-Marine Corps Relief activity, or at "sister" military relief agencies: the Air Force Aid Society, Army Emergency Relief, or Coast Guard Mutual Assistance.

· If your immediate needs occur after hours, or if you are not near a military facility, simply contact the nearest American Red Cross chapter to request Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society assistance.

· When you seek assistance, please bring your military/eligible family member ID card, leave papers, leave and earnings statement (if possible), information on indebtedness, and any other information which might be helpful in processing your request.
